On September 1, 2009 Richard O’Barry, now a renowned dolphin activist, posted on TakePart.com that the dolphin slaughter in Japan has stopped.
Today is September 1, the first day of the dolphin slaughter season in Japan. But when I arrived today by bus from Kansai Airport with media representatives from all over the world, the notorious Cove from the movie was empty. There were no dolphin killers in sight.
He continues by noting that when he arrived he came with journalists and a film crew, headed by his son, and was ready for his yearly fight with the fishermen. To his surprise he was greeted by a group of policemen who wanted to talk to him – not arrest him – as well as a number of Japanese TV crews, all of whom had previous refused to cover the story.
Most importantly there were no fishermen and no boats, which means no dolphin killing.
Ric O’Barry and Louie Psihoyos created the documentary The Cove as a means to shine a light of the slaughter of 23,000 dolphins every year. The Cove is currently playing at Alliance Atlantis Cumberland Cinemas.
