Soccer, music, festivities and SAMBA! Here’s welcoming the third annual Brazil Film Fest in Toronto. Stationed this year at the Royal Theatre on College Street, the festival this year is paying tribute to 5 very special feature films and 6 extraordinary documentaries. The line-up includes:
FEATURES
The Ballroom: Directed by Lais Bodanzky, the film is an enchanting tale of many characters’ experiences of one night on the majestic and passionate Brazilian dance floor.
Madame Sata: Directed by Karim Ainouiz, this is the incredible true story of Joao Francisco dos Santos, also known as Madame Sata who become one of the most remarkable cross-dressing singers in Brazil in the 1930’s.
Riding High: Directed by Roberto Santucci Filho, follows drug addict Case’s second chance at life after being released from prison. Once released, Case’s paranormal journey begins and he embarks in to a deep and layered plot to exact his revenge.
Romance: Directed by Guel Arraes, is the romantic and sole fictional love story inducted this year into the film festival. It follows an artistic couple’s wavy journey to overcome the daily pressures of life, love and sex.
That’s It: Directed by Matheus Souza, engages audience members into a world of existential thought, physiological reasoning and insightful advents of an upcoming generation taking the reins of a world—told through the eyes of two overly analytical university students.
DOCUMENTARIES
The Mystery of Samba: Directed by Carolina Jabor and Lula Baurque de Hollanda, captures the essence of Samba (the most celebrated dance in Brazil) through the eyes of a group of veteran musicians and composers from one of Rio’s most prestigious Samba schools.
Tom’s House: Directed by Ana Jobim, is a personal piece of art which sees filmmaker Jobim herself collect on celluloid the memories and accomplishments of her husband—one of Brazil’s greatest music creators of all time.
The Man Who Bottled Clouds: Directed by Lirio Ferreira, is an archival documentary on the nostalgic presence Brazilian dance had to Brazilian life in the 1940’s by means of musical performances, archival footage and testimonials.
Pierre Verger: Messenger Between Two Worlds: Directed by Lula Baurque de Hollanda, reincarnates the incredible life of French photographer Pierre Verger; who studied the relationship and mutual cultural influences between Brazil and Africa.
This is Pele: Directed by Luiz Carlos Barreto, chronicles the triumphs of famed soccer star Pele and how he changed the game of soccer forever.
The Brazil Film Fest Runs from October 22nd to the 25th at the Royal. Tickets are available online through ticket web Canada or by visiting www.ticketweb.ca.
