The 14th annual Reel Asian Film Festival is slated to run from Nov. 9th – 14th 2010, but you don’t have to wait that long catch a glimpse of the latest intriguing cinematic offerings from that part of the world. A special advance screening of Chinese-Canadian filmmaker Lixin Fan’s debut documentary Last Train Home (æ¸é€”列車) takes place next Friday (Feb. 26th) at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts.
Fan worked on sound production and editing, and later as a producer, on fellow Chinese-Canadian director Yung Chang’s acclaimed 2007 documentary Up The Yangtze, which offered a subtle portrait of the entrance into migrant work by China’s younger generation. Like Chang’s film, Last Train Home is concerned with the lives of migrant workers in China, both on a personal and demographic level. There are an estimated 130 million migrant workers in China, people who travel far from their homes and then from factory to factory depending on where paid work happens to be booming at the time. Most of them go home only once a year, for the Chinese New Year, and what results is a sudden massive human migration on an unimaginable scale. Fan’s film follows the various journeys of the Zhang family as they attempt to reunite for the holiday; more than just a personal story, the film inevitably explores the generational and ideological gaps opening up in contemporary China as it situates itself in the global economy.
Fan’s film has already received critical acclaim from the local press after it was shown as part of the Doc Soup screening series at the Bloor in January; Eye Weekly called it “resonant and empathetic.” With the kinds of vast landcapes and backdrops that serve as stages for these human stories, it can’t fail to be a cinematic gem.
Tickets are $20 per person, with all proceeds going to the Reel Asian Film Festival. Discounted ticket prices ($15) are available for group sales of ten tickets or more. Click here for more information and to watch the official trailer.
