Pleasure Dome Presents New Toronto Works: “High Spirits”

When I hear / read the word “party”, my skin gets all goosebumpy and some of the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Oh, and I bust out a big smile and also I start thinking about what cute outfit I am going to wear and what kinds of clever things I will say to impress the handsome intelligentsia present. And I get excited about having a whiskey sour or five. I like parties. Anyway, Pleasure Dome presents their New Toronto Works Show: “High Spirits” this Saturday, March 20th and [drumroll] there’s gonna be an after-party.

Pleasure Dome is a screening collective that presents experimental and avant-garde films, videos and installations. The “High Spirits” show, curated by Victoria Cheong, Yuula Benivolski, and Jimmy Palferro, presents some really fantastic new moving-image works by 14 artists, and each piece is usually between 1 and 10 minutes long (so if you don’t like one, you’ll probably like the next one). There’s a variety of stuff here for everyone: colours, lights, sounds, movement, and jarring images to test out your visual palette just in time for spring (at this time of year, its important to ease your eyes into seeing colours other than grey).

Pleasure Dome tells us the new works are “keen and perceptive; intimate and uncanny” and will transport viewers into “strange other worlds finding beauty, pleasantries and comfort there.” Sounds like just the thing for a fresh spring evening out in the ol’ urban metropolis. The screening takes place this Saturday, March 20th, 8:30 pm, at the Tranzac Club located at 292 Brunswick Avenue, just south of Bloor. Admission is $8, or $5 for students and members. The after-party, for which I am clearly more excited than is considered ‘cool’, kicks off at Double Double Land (209 Augusta Avenue) at 11:00 pm. There will be DJs, installations, live video mixing, and live performances. Admission to the party is free with your screening ticket, or $5 for those who do not attend the screening.
