Now that Hot Docs is almost over, you may be asking yourself where you’ll go next for great film in Toronto. Well, the TIFF Cinematheque summer season begins on June 3rd and runs until August 26th, and there’s lots of great stuff on offer! In this, their 20th anniversary celebration, they’re bringing back two fantastic retrospectives from the inaugural season – Pier Paolo Pasolini and Akira Kurosawa. And so much more.
This summer will feature the following programs:
The Man Between: James Mason – June 3 to July 5. Featuring several of Mason’s most interesting roles, including his turn in Hitchcock’s North by Northwest (1959), Kubrick’s Lolita (1962), and Ray’s Bigger than Life (1956).
Akira Kurosawa: Centenary of a Sensei – June 11 to August 2. A chance to experience the Japanese master of cinema in all his glory – his COMPLETE body of work.
Personal Views: A Tribute to Robin Wood – June 18 to July 3. Wood, for those of you who may not know, was a critic and educator of film, who passed away just last year (as a film student myself, I read many of his essays over the years). TIFF Cinematheque is paying tribute to him by screening ten of his critical film faves, and having some special guest speakers. See the program for all the details.
Special Screening: Joyce Wieland’s The Far Shore – June 30.
Pier Paolo Pasolini: The Poet of Contamination – July 8 to August 6. A full retrospective of the controversial Italian director (including a recent restoration of some of a ‘political found footage essay’ by Pasolini).
Catherine Breillat’s Anatomies of Desire – July 22 to August 15. The first Canadian retrospective of this French filmmaker’s provocative work.
Rohmer’s Six Moral Tales – July 29 to August 10. In the wake of French director Eric Rohmer’s recent death, TIFF Cinematheque presents his most celebrated works – his Six Moral Tales.
Julian Schnabel: Carte Blanche – August 26. An evening with this acclaimed director of Basquiat and Before Night Falls. The evening will feature Q & A sessions after screenings of Hector Babenco’s Pixote and Schnabel’s own Before Night Falls.
All screenings will take place in Jackman Hall at the Art Gallery of Ontario at 317 Dundas St W (it’s the last time it’ll be held here – it all moves to the new TIFF Bell Lightbox in the Fall!).
