Lovable Doug Glatt, slacker hero and hockey goon extraordinaire, will be appearing on home theatre screens across Canada when the Alliance Films home release of Goon on DVD hits store shelves…
Hey everybody – big news from the underground! A new cinema is rising from the ashes (it used to be an Asian rep movie house but closed in the mid-1990s). Located at 186 Spadina Avenue, just north of Queen Street, the Toronto Underground Cinema will have its opening party this Friday, May 14th beginning at 6pm, and along with secret prizes to give away, they’ll be screening (for FREE) two 1980s cult classics for your viewing pleasure: Clue and Big Trouble in Little China.
Boasting Toronto’s second largest single screen theatre (over 700 seats!), the space has also been used as a special events venue. The people who run the place say they’re committed to showing ‘cult classics, seldom seen treasures and popular favourites’.
All we know so far about programming for certain is Friday’s opening night lineup and what’s going this Sunday evening – May 16th, starting at 6:30pm, they’ll be having a Jim Henson tribute featuring The Muppets Take Manhattan and Labyrinth. The evening will include prizes and some special guests, too; John Pattison, writer/creator of Puppets Who Kill, and Lawrence S. Mirkin producer of Fraggle Rock and who worked on Labyrinth. All this for only $8 a ticket, or $14 for for the double bill.
They have a Facebook page up here, and (fingers crossed!) will get a full website going with a schedule soon. I, for one, eagerly await their programming details. Yay for Toronto Underground Cinema! Nice to have a new theatre on the scene. Check ‘em out!
