Here’s the low down on what’s going on this week at Toronto’s Rep Cinemas.
Fox Theatre
The Fox will be running various screenings of Martin Scorsese’s new 3D adventure, Hugo, J. Edgar, the new melodrama from Clint Eastwood, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Hoover; The Help, Moneyball, Midnight in Paris, and My Week with Marilyn. Also screening on Saturday, January 28 at noon is a program of local filmmaker Nathaniel Fox-Pappas’s short experimental films. Check their website for all the details and showtimes.
Projection Booth
The Projection Booth will continue this week with multiple screenings of Paul Goodman Changed my Life, Cave of Forgotten Dreams, Le Havre, Midnight in Paris, Buck, and Nostalgia for the Light. Saturday, January 28 is another edition of Super Punch Saturday with Sonny Chiba’s Street Fighter Series. And on Sunday, January 29 at 6:00 pm is another Bollywood Basement classic, Jewel Thief. Revue Cinema
Up this week at the Revue will be screenings of My Week with Marilyn, Like Crazy, Moneyball, Midnight in Paris, The Muppets, with the new Charlize Theron film from Jason Reitman, Young Adult, beginning on Friday, January 27. Also on this week is another edition of Book Revue, with a screening of the fabulous 1967 classic The Graduate starting at 6:45 pm on Tuesday, January 24. On Thursday, January 26 at 6:30 pm is a screening of Babette’s Feast (1987) for Epicure Revue. And on Friday, January 27 at 3:30 pm is a special community fundraiser for a local nursery school, featuring some short films. Check the Revue website for all the details and showtimes.
The Royal
Screening on Tuesday through Thursday this week at the Royal is The Way and Dr. Strangelove (1964), the late Stanley Kubrick’s darkly comic look at the Cold War (which stars the incomparable Peter Sellers in a number of roles). On Friday, January 27 is a late-night screening of cult classic, The Room. Unfortunately, at the time of this article’s publication, the Royal hasn’t posted the weekend listings, so you’ll have to keep an eye on their schedule for what’s happening later in the week. Toronto Underground Cinema
This Thursday, January 26 at the Underground are a couple of bird films; Hitchcock’s classic The Birds screens at 7:00 pm, and at 9:30 pm, they’re screening the low-budget and bloody Birds homage Birdemic: Shock and Terror (2010). On Friday, January 27 at 9:00 pm and 11:55 pm respectively, are screenings of Repo! The Genetic Opera, and perennial favourite, Rocky Horror Picture Show. Check out their website for more details.
