Review: Slap ‘N’ Tickle – WSFF 2012

For those with a taste for something a little more racy, the 2012 CFC Worldwide Short Film Festival turns up the heat with the short programme, Slap ‘N’ Tickle, screening Thursday, June 7, 2012 at 10:15 pm. A collection of shorts with a sexual theme, Slap ‘N’ Tickle is full of hilarious and titillating films, including animation, stop motion, and live action. Very little is left to the imagination here and the programme should be a big hit with couples looking for an amusing night out. Highlights include Would You, the short but sexy 030, and the role playing fun of Cockatoo.

Would You – United States – 7 minutes

This short stars Dave Franco (James Franco’s younger brother) and Talia Tabin (Parks And Recreation) as two friends playing a game of would-you-rather, that starts to get out of hand. The characters are a bit overboard at first, but this is quickly overcome by just how funny the short is. For anyone unfamiliar with would-you-rather, it’s a game where one person offers another two options that are usually a little outrageous, and the person must pick which one they would rather do. The game starts off normally enough, but the two friends start to realize that their choices may have consequences they didn’t consider. The short also has an appearance by Chris Mintz-Plasse in a hilarious cameo.

030 – Denmark – 3 minutes

Take one guitar, one gorgeous woman, and a pounding rock song, and you’ve got the incredibly steamy music video 030. This short could only be described as a woman having a one night stand with a guitar, and is sure to fog up your glasses. The music is great and who could complain about an attractive woman with a guitar? Audience members will be looking to start their own bands after this one.

Cockatoo – Australia – 11 minutes

This comedy short deals with a man trying to get over his last relationship. To get some help, he contacts an agency that sends over a woman who will pretend to be his ex-lover so he can get some closure. Things start to look up a bit for the man until his actual ex-lover shows up at his door while the woman from the agency is still there. Cockatoo is actually quite sweet, showing that the Slap ‘N’ Tickle programme isn’t only about sex, but also the way relationships affect us.

Other shorts in the programme include Opposites Attack, a short about a blind date from hell that doesn’t end like you would imagine; Excuse Me, which features a couple arguing over what one of them may have said while in bed; Mouthful, a very funny short about a couple who decide they have to be truthful with each other, even if it drives them crazy; Anti-Reproductive Mating Ritual, an odd short film featuring two naked skateboarding men; One Minute Puberty, an animated short taking viewers on an accelerated journey through puberty; The Relationship Doctrine of Don Blanquito, a short documentary about rapper Don Blanquito, a man whose advice for relationships would be better ignored; Cougar Lesbians Go To College, which is exactly what it sounds like as three lesbian cougars hit the local college to find a young girlfriend; Tempest In A Bedroom, a stop motion short about a couple who have a weekend getaway to ignite their passion while a maid and a repairman find their own fun in the couples house; and finally, there’s I’m Your Man, a side splitting comedy where a man and his ex-girlfriend decide to have a passionate afternoon, only to find that they’re now stuck together, literally.

Slap ‘N’ Tickle screens as part of the  CFC Worldwide Short Film Festival on Thursday, June 7, 2012, at 10:15 pm. Check the festival website for details and tickets.

Raised on a healthy diet of Star Wars and every horror film on a video store shelf, Will has been watching movies since before he was able to talk. Inspired by an ever growing passion for film, and the occasional mind control experiment, Will began writing film review on his personal blog, The Film Reel. When the mind control experiments actually worked, he was able to secure a position with Toronto Film Scene. He now waits patiently in the TFS basement for October to come every year, when his love for horror films finally pays off.
