TIFF 2012 transports you to Mumbai with City to City

Each year TIFF makes sure that Toronto shares some of the film spotlight with another city during the festival. The City to City programme takes several films that reflect the culture of a city and brings them to Toronto audiences. Previous editions have featured the cinema of Tel Aviv, Istanbul and Buenos Aires. Now, in the programme’s fourth year, it’s Mumbai’s turn. This year, TIFF shows ten films from India’s most populous city: Gangs of Wasseypur Part One and Gangs of Wasseypur Part Two; Miss Lovely; Mumbai’s King; Peddlers; Shahid; Shanghai; Ship of Theseus,  Ishaqzaade and The Bright Day.

Gangs of Wasseypur   is a sprawling story of two rivaling families during the twentieth century told in two parts. The first of Anurag Kashyap’s crime epics premiered in June 2012, and TIFF 2012 presents a fresh opportunity to see the second part, which premieres on August 8, 2012.

Manjeet Singh’s Mumbai’s King (2012), follows a boy on his journey of growing up in the slums of Mumbai. The Bright Day is an intimate portrait of a man attempting to find the spiritual side of his life. The film, directed by Mohit Takalkar, was shot using DSLR cameras.

Miss Lovely,  released in 2012 but set in the 1980s, is a film about film, in which two brothers produce sexy horror films. This showing at City to City presents the rare opportunity to both see an Indian film, as well as experience what it was like to make them.

The schedule for the City to City programme, featuring Hindi language films from Mumbai, will be released on August 21, 2012. The City to City ticket package is $156 for adults and $100 for students and seniors. Visit tiff.net for City to City information and more from TIFF 2012.
