Today on the Scene: screenings and film fun for Saturday, August 11, 2012

It may be lousy weather for the beach this weekend, but it is certainly perfect weather for the movies. It looks like it’s going to be a wet one over the next few days, so you might as well take advantage of it and take shelter in a dry theater. Here is what’s happening today on the Scene for Saturday, August 11, 2012.

At 11:00 am, Over the Hedge is playing at select Cineplex theaters in their third last Family Favourites screening of the summer. This is an animated film that never found a huge audience, but I always found it particularly entertaining. Either way, it’s a fun way to spend the morning with the kids.

At Camera Bar on Queen West today at 3:00 pm, their Saturday screening is famed Canadian Ivan Reitman’s Meatballs. This is the movie that launched Reitman’s career, and a little Bill Murray never hurt either.

Hey music lovers, the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema is the place you want to be today. At 1:00 pm, you can catch the classic Bugsy Malone, featuring music by Paul Williams. This screening pairs well with the documentary Paul Williams Still Alive, playing at 6:30 pm. If you’re more into metal, Metallica: Some Kind of Monster is showing at 3:30 pm. At 9:00 pm, Searching for Sugar Man takes the screen and from what I’ve heard, this isn’t a doc you want to miss. Closing off the night at 11:15 pm is The Last Waltz, Martin Scorsese’s concert documentary featuring The Band.

Who doesn’t love a trip to TIFF Bell Lightbox? If you need your fix, there are a lot of great films playing today. Continuing the First Peoples Cinema: 1500 Nations, One Tradition series is Mohawk Girls / Nana at 1:00 pm. As a remake of the great French film, Le feu follet, the Norwegian update Oslo, August 31st might be worth checking out at 1:45 pm or 6:15 pm. You can read our review of it here. At 5:00 pm, make sure you are at the screening of secret gem Le Combat dans l’ile as part of the ongoing Summer in France series. If you were underwhelmed by the Total Recall remake, you can catch the original at 8:00 pm for another installment of The Rise of the Beefcake Cinema series.

For something a little more adventurous, Pleasure Dome’s annual Open Screening Under the Stars is tonight at 9:00 pm. Anyone can bring their own experimental film to screen, as long as it is under 10 minutes long. If you have an experimental film you want screened, just arrive by 8:00 pm to submit it. The event is pay what you can, and is at 401 Richmond Street West.

Missed Jaws at TIFF Bell Lightbox? It’s playing today at the Fox at 4:15 pm and 9:00 pm. Maybe The Beach isn’t the prime location to play Spielberg’s classic, but you still shouldn’t miss your chance to see it on the big screen.

Stay dry, bring an umbrella, and don’t forget to check back tomorrow for Sunday’s happenings on the Toronto film scene.
