Paul Williams stars in "The Phantom of the Paradise"
Today on the Scene: screenings and film fun for Monday, August 13, 2012

Monday’s aren’t always the best day, especially not after a gray, cold, sleepy weekend like the one that just passed, which makes them the perfect time to hide away in a cinema. So take advantage of a quiet day at the theatre and ease into your week with these great movies playing today on the Scene for Monday, August 13, 2012.

The lovely and inspiring doc Craigslist Joe opened at Projection Booth on Friday and screens today at 8:00 pm, followed up by Battle Royale at 10:00 pm, while The Fox screens To Rome with Love and continues its run of Jaws (for those people who almost died because they didn’t catch it at TIFF Bell Lightbox, here’s your chance!).

The Toronto Film Society’s Another British Invasion double bill series continues tonight at 7:30 pm with The Ghost Train and Sleeping Car to Trieste at the Carlton Cinema. While those black and white oldies are on tonight,The Bloor will be offering a new film about an old guy and and old film about an even older story. Searching for Sugar Man, the story of a musician who disappeared from the spotlight only to be found 30 years later and told he was, in fact a superstar, screens tonight at 6:30 pm. After that, stick around for the 70s glam retelling of the Faust story, Phantom of the Paradise, starring Paul Williams as the devil. Yes, that’s right. There isn’t anything that isn’t spectacular about this film, and since it’s rare to see it on the big screen, you probably shouldn’t miss it.

TIFF Bell Lightbox has a number of run of engagement screenings on today. Olso, August 31st, which TFS writer Will Brownridge calls one of the best movies of the year, screens at 6:15 pm, while Beasts of the Southern Wild screens at 6:45 and 9:10 pm, Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry screens at 7:00 and 9:15 pm and First Position screens at 7:25 pm.

Surely one of these great films tickles your fancy, so grab a sweater and snuggle up in a cinema seat today.

Like most people who write for the web, I’ve been obsessed with movies since I was very young. My favourite movies are The Social Network, Easy A and Garden State, but I try to spend my time broadening my film horizons. I’m the Publisher of Toronto Film Scene and I Heart Movies, and in my “spare” time, I’m a web designer and strategist. (Gotta support my movie habit somehow…)
