Whale Rider
Today on the Scene: screenings and film fun for Wednesday, August 15, 2012

After last weekend’s (much-needed) rain, it will hopefully be clear this evening for us to enjoy a couple of great (and free!) outdoor movie opportunities. Today on the Scene TIFF in the Park presents a screening of What’s Up Doc? with Barbara Streisand and Ryan O’Neal at 9:00 pm in David Pecaut Square. And Harbourfront Free Flicks hosts a showing of the lovely New Zealand film Whale Rider at the WestJet Stage amphitheatre.

Tonight, TIFF Bell Lightbox will feature the latest installment of its Free Screen series with Jonathan Schwartz: The Skies Can’t Keep Their Secrets at 7:00 pm, with six of Schwartz’s 16mm experimental film works and a visit from the filmmaker himself. TIFF will also screen several films on for a limited engagement: Oslo, August 31st, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry, First Position, and the new suspense thriller Compliance. Most have multiple screenings throughout the day, so check the TIFF calendar to see what’s most convenient.

There’s a 7:00 pm screening of the 1952 musical Singin’ in the Rain at participating Cineplex theatres, as part of the Cineplex Classic Film Series. Toronto’s indie theatres are coming to the table with Projection Booth’s afternoon showing of Blue Like Jazz at 3:00 pm; Iron Sky at 9:30 pm at The Royal; the Fox has Safety Not Guaranteed at 7:00 pm and Woody Allen’s new one, To Rome with Love, at 9:00 pm; and The Intouchables and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel play at The Revue at 6:45 and 9:15 pm respectively.

And if you’re a documentary fan, there’s some pretty fantastic offerings today. Craigslist Joe has a 5:00 pm screening at Projection Booth; the NFB Mediatheque’s Free Favourites at Four series features Up the Yangtze at 4:00 pm, and the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema continues its run of Searching for Sugar Man at 9:30 pm and has a special Doc Soup screening of Jesus Camp at 6:30 pm.

Enjoy your wealth of Wednesday cinema options!
