Great docs, indie fare and continued Hollywood attractions populate the screenings today. It’s also the last Tuesday of August, which, of course, is a major bummer. With the number of outdoor screenings dwindling, take advantage of a final opportunity to watch a film under the stars at Yonge-Dundas Square. Keep reading to find all the details for what’s happening today on the scene for Tuesday August 28, 2012.
TIFF Bell Lightbox’s screenings begin at 12:00 pm today, and will consist of the regular rotation of First Position, Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry, Compliance and Beasts of the Southern Wild all with multiple showtimes.
Over at Bloor Hot Docs Cinema, two documentaries will be playing. Hell and Back Again is at 6:45 pm. The Academy Award nominated doc takes an in-depth look at the War in Afganistan on an individual level. Following that, at 9:15 pm, is Darwin, which showcases an eccentric town of 35 people in Death Valley, California.
On the Rep Cinema side of things, the Fox Theatre has the charming Beasts of the Southern Wild at 7:00 pm and another shot to see The Amazing Spider-Man at 9:00 pm. The Royal features 2 Days in New York, starring Chris Rock and Julie Delpy, the latter of whom also directed the film. Magic Mike and Beasts of the Southern Wild screen at 7:00 pm and 9:15 pm, respectively, at the Revue. Projection Booth East starts their day at 1:30 pm with a screening of Blue Like Jazz. At 3:30 pm and 8:00 pm, the Irish drama Snap continues the second week of its run. At 9:30 pm, the Projection Booth shows Craiglist Joe, a doc about a man who tries to survive purely off Craigslist.
As previously mentioned, today is the final installment of Yonge-Dundas Square’s Cult Classics series. The classic screening outdoors tonight is 1964′s Hush…Hush Sweet Charlotte, starring Joseph Cotten and Bette Davis. The free screening begins at 8:00 pm.
