I know that TIFF is about to descend upon us, but let’s take a moment to find out what else in cinema is going on in the city. One of my favourites, the annual horror, cult, action and sci-fi festival, Toronto After Dark, has just announced the first ten films in its 2012 line up – and that calls for plenty of celebration, as far as I’m concerned.
The line up (so far) includes the Canadian premiere of Spanish zombie film REC 3: Genesis; the Sundance hit, Excision; the Irish film, Grabbers, which has taken its lead from the most excellent Tremors; the dark comedy A Fantastic Fear of Everything, starring Simon Pegg as a nervous writer of serial killer novels; a Japanese horror comedy, Dead Sushi; a comedy Lloyd The Conqueror, about college students playing out their geeky game fantasies; Doomsday Book, the Korean film that recently won the Fantasia Film Festival’s Best Film Award; Sushi Girl, a violent crime film boasting an awesome cast – Michael Biehn, Danny Trejo, Sonny Chiba and Mark Hammill; another Sundance hit, Wrong, from Quentin Dupieux (Rubber); and the Canadian premiere of Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning.
Keep your eyes out for their next TAD 2012 line up announcement, due out at the end of September.
