Today marks the first day of fall. That also marks the beginning of awards season and great movies. To help get your viewing schedule organized, here is what’s happening today on the Scene for September, September 22, 2012.
At TIFF Bell Lightbox, there is plenty to choose from, from TIFF 2012 Canadian favourites like Rebelle and Laurence Anyways to the Oscar buzzed Beasts of the Southern Wild. Portuguese auteur Miguel Gomes’ latest film Tabu is also being screened.
If you avoided the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema during the festival, it is safe to return this weekend for an interesting day of programming. You can start off with the beautiful 1987 German film, Wings of Desire. At 5:00 pm, see France’s answer to Gone With the Wind, the 1945 classic Les Enfants du Paradis. For an after dinner movie at 9:00 pm, the darkly comedic A Serious Man is playing. And if you missed the Sigur Ros show in August, you can check out the concert film Inni at 11:30 pm for the next best thing.
At 3:00 pm, head to Camera Bar on Queen Street West for a free screening of Raiders of the Lost Ark. If you’re up a little earlier, take the kids (or just yourself) to see the guilty pleasure Mrs. Doubtfire at select Cineplex theaters this morning at 11:00 am.
Did you miss The Master at TIFF? Not to worry, it’s playing at the Varsity in 70 mm, which is pretty cool. The Varsity is currently the only theatre showing this movie so arrive early to ensure a prime seat.
The 7th annual Commffest Global Community Festival continues today at the Market Rainbow Cinemas. With programming full of documentaries and student shorts, it is a chance to see unique films that support community building.
If apple picking and farmer markets aren’t your thing, there’s always the movies to turn to so come back tomorrow for Sunday’s happening on the Toronto film scene.
