Today on the Scene: screenings and film fun for Sunday, September 23, 2012

Sunday afternoon television is the worst, so you might as well go to the movies until at least prime time. Here is what’s happening today in the Scene for Sunday, September 23, 2012.

At the TIFF Bell Lightbox, there is plenty to choose from, from TIFF 2012 Canadian favourites like  Rebelle and  Laurence Anyways to the Oscar buzzed Beasts of the Southern Wild. Portuguese auteur Miguel Gomes’ latest film Tabu is also being screened.

The Bloor Hot Docs Cinema has four Sunday offerings. At 1:00 pm, it is the documentary The Day After Peace. If you missed the Friday night Alfred Hitchcock double bill at Innis College, North By Northwest is playing at 3:30 pm. For some culture, check out Wagner and Me at 6:30 pm. Film buffs rejoice as The Story of Film: An Odyssey series begins with the first two episodes at 9:00 pm.

The 7th annual Commffest Global Community Festival continues today at the Market Rainbow Cinemas. With programming full of documentaries and student shorts, it is a chance to see unique films that support community building.

A TIFF favourite, The Master begins it’s Toronto run at the Varsity this weekend, and in 70 mm no less. Just make sure to arrive early.

All good things must come to an end, including the weekend. I assure you, though, there will be enough films to see during the week to keep you going so check back tomorrow for Monday’s happenings on the Toronto film scene.
