Who doesn’t love a good movie? At this, my favorite time of year, I look forward to the frustration of my family and friends as they navigate the delicate landscape of my movie collection to try and determine which, if any, films I do not own yet. Every film buff would like nothing better than to unwrap that gift to find something associated to a movie that took their imagination away like only a good movie can. This year there are many options for gift giving for the film fan, and also for the movie goer who may not spend all of their hard earned cash on movies throughout the year. You can count on us to let you know what every cinephile will be looking for this year in all realms of movie-dom in our Holiday Gift Guide for the True Movie Geek.

Blu-rays

It was a phenomenal year for the Blu-ray format, not only just with great new releases, but for classic cinema arriving on hi def. We take a look at the top 5 picks for this Christmas.

Alfred Hitchcock: The Masterpiece Collection

This is a no brainer. 15 of the Master of Suspense’s most beloved films in one collection, most of the film on Blu-ray for the first time. Psycho , The Birds , Vertigo , Rear Window , North by Northwest and many more grace this gorgeous box set along with dozens of hours of supplemental material to keep even the most diehard cinephile busy throughout the remainder of the holiday season. And the restorations are breathtaking.

Prometheus Collector’s Edition

Ridley Scott’s return to the universe of Alien was a cult hit this year and one of the most stunning films in years. The Prometheus Collector’s Edition contains the jaw-dropping movie in hi-def perfection and loads of behind-the-scenes features as well as a full-length documentary delving into the controversial backstories and philosophies within the film’s story.

The Avengers

You just cannot have a Blu-ray collection this year without Joss Whedon’s megahit The Avengers. The movie really does have it all with incredible action sequences, hilarious humor and the best on screen incarnation of The Hulk to date. And the picture and sound are out of this world.

Jaws/E.T. The Extra Terrestrial/Complete Indiana Jones Collection

2012 was a big year for Spielberg fans with the release The Complete Indiana Jones Collection (finally) as well as the father of summer blockbusters, Jaws , and the king of all family adventures, E.T . All of the films were meticulously restored and just look immaculate. For fans of the most popular director in film history, this is a 3 for 3 win.

Universal 100th Anniversary Collection

If you have a movie nut on your list but one that doesn’t get to buy movies too often, or is just getting into the Blu-ray thing with a home theatre set up, you are in luck. With Universal Studios celebrating its 100th Anniversary this year, they have released a Blu-ray box set in commemoration. Containing 25 films from over 100 years, the set includes such classics as Spartacus, To Kill a Mockingbird, Back to the Future, Do the Right Thing, Jurassic Park and many more. An instant collection in one box, this is the go to gift to start out a new collection.

The Walking Dead: The Complete Second Season Limited Edition

The Walking Dead has become a cult sensation and one of the most popular shows on TV, but why just own the seasons on Blu-ray when you can own it inside of a zombie head! The Walking Dead: The Complete Second Season Limited Edition comes packaged inside a decaying zombie head complete with a screwdriver that, when jammed in the eye and raised, reveals the Blu-ray set inside.
